Cant open sims from external hard drive

I have a macbook air (2016) which ran out of space so I bought a 500GB external hard drive. My game is located in the correct place in origin settings but whenever i try and open it it stays in the hotbar, bounces as if it will open and then says application is not responding. I have tried everything including reinstalling origin and downloading the game straight to the external hard drive. I am going crazy i have no idea what to do!
