Expansion Pack not recognized on External Harddrive

I was able to download the base Sims 4 game to my external hard drive for my Mac and play without any issues but it is not recognizing the Seasons expansion pack I recently downloaded despite it being installed on the same external hard drive. Any fixes for this? Does it need to be in the exact same folder as the Sims 4 game or can it be separate?
