To rule out anything Mac hardware or macOS related, can you make sure no other apps are running including background apps such as third party cloud storage syncing, music apps, antivirus etc. then launch the game and see if it still happens.
Which exact model Mac do you have?

Yes I usually close down all apps before playing sims. I have a Macbook Air 2020. I have tried the 'repair' option in the EA app multiple times too but that hasn't helped either

Is it an Intel MacBook Air or Apple silicon M1 model? Apple released two models in 2020.
Rename the Sims 4 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts then launch the game, a new one will be created. Quit the game and copy one of your saves from the old Sims 4 > saves folder into the newly created Sims 4 > saves folder then launch the game. Play for a bit. Do you still have the same issues?
