@mellamopeggyhill Are you on a Mac? There's currently a known issue that looks very much like yours:
Switching to windowed mode usually fixes it, and you can resize the window to take up your entire screen if you want. If this doesn't help, please post in that thread and list the specs of your Mac, as described here:
If you're running Windows, it's still worth trying windowed mode, or fullscreen if you already use windowed or borderless. Let me know if you're still having issues.
