Horrible Peformance on iMac 2019 with Vega 48 (Core i9)

Hello everyone!

So I just got a maxed out 2019 iMac with Core i9 and Vega 48 graphics. I know that Vega 48 isn't the ultimate graphics card, but it's definitely a card that can handle AAA games (I can get around 45fps on Max Settings at 1440p with Shadow of the Tomb Raider - a very demanding game).

So I was shocked to find that when I booted up The Sims 4, it didn't recognise my graphics card despite it being released in 2019.

I went into the GraphicsCards file and found that while the graphics cards for the 2019 MacBook Pros and the iMac Pro have been added to the file, the Vega 48 is missing.

I thought that maybe it would mean nothing but this is what I found:

- Very low frame rate (15 - 25fps) on Max Settings at most times at 1440p resolution. I tried turning Retina Mode off but got only slightly better rates. And it isn't smooth, camera feels very heavy. Laptop Mode also has a very tiny boost, hovers around 20fps.

- Sims seem to appear Low Poly when I move my camera away from them and move it back - they take a while to come back.

- The game seems to majorly struggle in areas where there are a lot of Sims and animations going on - the Magic Realm lot seems to be the worst getting down to as low as 7FPS when multiple Sims are dueling - it's basically unplayable.

- I can get a very stable frame rate in the secret areas, the Grotto, The Glade etc where there is a blank lot and no NPC's.

By comparison, I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2015 and I can get over 120fps+ Max Settings with Laptop Mode and 30fps with occasional dips with Laptop Mode off at 1400x900 resolution (pretty sure with Retina Mode on it's effectively 1440x900 at Native with some visual enhancements but I could be wrong).

After doing some reading I found that the 2019 MacBook Pro's had a ton of issues until they were added to the GraphicsCards registry officially, can this be the same for the Vega 48?

I attached some files - thanks guys!

Let me know if you need anything more!

Thanks 🙂 Right click on the game in your Applications folder and select Show Package Contents then navigate to Contents > Resources, then open the GraphicsCards.sgr file with TextEdit. Directly under the first line showing vendor "ATI" 0x1002 create a new line and copy/paste the following:

    card 0x6869 "AMD Radeon Pro Vega 48" $cardLevelUber $resolutionHigh

Then quit the file and launch your game. How is it? After you close it please open the config file again and see it is now says [Found: 1, Supported: 1]

  • @Bluebellflora @Bluebellflora Hello! Thought you might be interested to know that performance was *greatly* improved after I downgraded to Mojave.

The game worked better, but was still quite chuggy and stuttery while playing in Catalina, but I downgraded to Mojave for 32 bit apps and the game ran much smoother, almost a solid 60fps at 4k max settings, only slight dips when moving the camera around Sims or builds. But few stutters.

Great that you could go back to Mojave! Wonder if the drivers for the Vega in Catalina are the issue? My 2019 iMac is still running Mojave but I'm running Catalina on my MBP with AMD Radeon Pro 560 4GB and it runs well.

Thanks so much for the feedback, it's so helpful 🙂
