Yes, my computer is up to date.
I tried playing with a clean game folder, but the problem still persisted. I tried repairing the game and then logging out of Origin and then restarting my computer, which seemed to work for a few hours before my game once again "froze" and I couldn't interact with anything.

Set up a new user account on your Mac and see if you can successfully play in that account.
