Well I did look at it but was still limited to control and my documents. Eventually I did call you and an adviser told me to use a registry cleaner like CC Cleaner to uninstall Origin. It was there that I found the problem. There were registry files related to game still in my system that I didn't find when doing a search and clean of my MAC library. I managed to find them and uninstall them and as a result I'm happy to say that it has worked and the base game and all relevant packs are ready for downloading and installing again. I finally know now what to do in case something like this happens again.
Thank you for you help and advice

I have the exact same problem. And I have also tried uninstalling everything, following the guides for uninstalling both the sims 3 and origin. Nothing helps. So how did you manage it with CCleaner? Care to share?

Use apps that purport to get rid of hidden files with caution, they can destabilise your Mac. Have you tried the Origin reset tool?
