I can't find the report but I'm starting to think it's not an issue with the computer, because when I played the game in a different save file the freezing wasn't happening. I was able to play the gameplay of the other save files, but when I returned to the one I'd been playing I was able to access CAS and manage the worlds, but once gameplay began I made it through maybe 15 seconds before my game froze again. My last few saves of that particular save file were all in the last 24 hours, after the problem occurred. I'm afraid that save file is corrupted. Is there any way to save it?

Finally managed to test the save - sorry for the delay!
It crashed for me too. I wondered if it might be related to the Alien Stole My Parents scenario so I tested the following:
You could try other edits to the family and see if you can fix it but I think the save may be borked ☹️

thank you for trying those methods! I'll try doing a few edits but if all else fails, I'll save all the played households for that save file to my library and drop them in a new save file. thank you again for the info <3
