    I have just found a solution to the problem - started the game without the latest packages, saved the game without them. Turned on the packages and saved again. That seemed to do the trick. Let's see how long it will take until it breaks again.

Wow! So I created a brand new game, then saved it. Went back and loaded the old game and it worked fine. I had no idea that would do the trick but I tried it just as a test to see if the whole game was corrupted and it magically fixed the problem. Thanks for your help!
