Sims 4 mac does not work after update

I have The Sims 4 (base game + Get Famous, no cc, no mods) which I play on my Macbook Pro (early 2011 model), Mountain Lion OSX. After the recent Sims 4 update via Origin I am unable to play the game.

This error message pops up: "The Sims 4 cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure The Sims 4 works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X."

Ridiculous because I had been playing the game just fine just before the update. Please help - I have been trying to repair the game for hours now.
