Can you move the Sims 4 folder and play a brand new, clean game to see how it performs?

- well I did as you suggested and then the game wouldn't launch at all :/ (put the old folder back and deleted the new one first).
That's strange and shouldn't happen. The game should automatically create a new Sims 4 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts. Can you repair the game and try again? When you say it didn't open, did anything happen at all?
Downloading and installing the GPU driver directly from NVIDIA will help improve smooth gameplay but it isn't normal practice and is done at your own risk. Apple don't update the drivers very often which is more than irritating. I have written a guide on how to do it here if you need it.
- Thank you for the guide to Apples software. The game DID create a new Sims 4 folder indeed, but just wouldn't load - at all. The report read, that loading stalled 10 minutes, that is all I know.
