Sims 4 won't launch on Mac - error message pops up - Sims 4 is already running

I have force quit, shut down computer, uninstalled and reinstalled the game but the same message keeps appearing that the game is already running. I eventually found a link to Safe Mode my Mac but I'm concerned what will happen to my computer if I do this because a possible side effect is that wifi won't work.
