All you're doing is moving out your Mods folder, launching the game, taking your sims into CAS and trying to apply Maxis details. When you're done testing quit the game and don't save.
yes, without any mods, the maxis skin details SEEM to stick, although i can't fully test that without saving the game, exiting, and going back in, which would mean id lose the skin details on that family for good (and pretty much everything else, since i didn't have mods in).
but i'm telling you- the mods are not the problem. i couldn't replicate the issue with mods in, i told you. i made a new sim, added modded-in skin details, saved and left the game, and when i came back, the new sim still had his non-maxis skin details. i tried taking out my mod folders one by one, and there wasn't any change. and if i take all my mods out, i can't tell if the problem is fixed, because there aren't any skin details left to see!

Yes you can test it without affecting your current game. Just move the whole Sims 4 folder to the desktop and load up a brand new game and test it. All your saves and Mods will be safe in the folder you moved. - 6 years ago
i think that you're not reading what i'm saying. the mods aren't causing the problem, because i can't replicate it WITH OR WITHOUT mods. if i make a new sim and add ANY skin details, maxis or otherwise, the skin details stick. something is affecting my old sims.

I'm reading exactly what you're saying. Have you uploaded an old Sim to the gallery, loaded a completely vanilla game, downloaded the old Sim into the new vanilla game, taken them into CAS and tried the skin details? If you do that I can also download them and test in my own game. - 6 years ago
yes, i have tested applying new skin details in a vanilla game and a modded game. both times, the new skin details stuck. however, in a vanilla game, i can't observe whether the problem is fixed, because none of my sims have maxis skin details, so when i remove all mods, the skin details are gone anyways.

yes, but so do CC skin details. the problem is with the skin details they already had, not with adding new ones.

would like to add that i discovered my friend is experiencing the same problem- she also uses a mac.

@Bluebellflora I think I'm having the same problem. I don't have cc or mods so those are not causing a problem for me.
Sims which had tattoos before the patch-with-mac-tattoo-fix still have the tattoo in live mode but if I go into plan outfits via a wardrobe, the tattoo disappears. If I re-add it now, the tattoo works across all outfits and it does appear to stick.
Now that I have been able to access the gallery, I've uploaded a sim I made pre the patch-with-mac-tattoo-fix, name Magenta. She has a small heart on her left shoulder.
This isn't a huge problem for me as I don't use *that* many tattoos / skin details or change my existing sims outfits that often. I can see it would be frustrating if you do.

new update: i was able to edit one of my sims that still had the skin details on- i suspect it was because they were a randomly-generated townie that i edited. so the glitch is confined to sims i personally created. @Bluebellflora
