BSOD while playing SIMS 4

So, my husband and I built new PCs and this is the first time I've tried playing on my new PC, a new character and trying to furnish a new apartment then - BSOD. When my old computer had a BSOD it was related to a C-Media sound chip. This new computer is all Realtek, so I'm at a loss.  Any help would be appreciated.

DX Diag attached.

Not sure what happened to my previous reply?

Essentially I wiped the system last night and only updated drivers, installed Origin and Sims 4 base game. Base game played fine for about 3 hours. Once I closed/reopened the game and the expansions were applied it crashed within a few minutes (just the game, no BSOD).

Since then I have set the game to run in compatibility mode. I haven't had any issues so far. I'm assuming the wipe/reload and compatibility mode have corrected my issues.

  • I've managed to recreate crash three times. This is what I got:

First time, the BSOD and its error is NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM which isn't helped with that link. I googled it and came to a dead end. Everything I can find on that error usually occurs on startup and won't allow you to boot and not during use like me. I enabled Mini dumps so I am just going to keep trying to get it to do a BSOD again so I can get a dump file. I might be able to contact Microsoft directly if need be.

Next, the game itself has frozen my entire system another time. Nothing responded, not even Ctrl+Alt+Del. I forced it down.

Thirdly, the game also crashed back to my desktop and Origin was open as if I'd used it to launch instead of my shortcut.

I'm going to keep going and see if I can get anywhere, another code, a dump file, anything. If anyone has any other ideas that would be great.

For the record NOTHING else is crashing my system. I've played a game through steam for the last several days with no issues. I only need to play the sims for a few minutes for the crash to occur.

Try to run a chkdsk /f on all drives. See if it finds errors.

Origin always start even though you run the program file directly.

  • I completed chkdsk /F and it found no errors. Since then I have had multiple crashes and BSODs. I now have 5 mini dmp files.

    Some things I have tried:

    • Uninstalled and clean installed graphics card drivers.
    • Turned off Origin In Game overlay option
    • Uninstalled Sims 4 and deleted all game data on C:\ drive. Reinstalled.
    • SFC /scannow in Powershell - no errors found.

The new BSOD codes I am getting are:

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED

The game has completely locked up the system, has just crashed the game itself and dropped back to my desktop and has locked up the game though Ctrl+Alt+Del did work it wouldn't bring up Task Manager. I used Start key to select restart.

I am running DirectX 12 - is there a known issue with that and Sims 4 that I just haven't located yet?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I can't play more than a couple minutes before it crashes/BSOD.

The errors IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED point to memory or driver errors.

Open the Settings app and go to Update and Security > Troubleshoot. Scroll down and select Hardware and Devices, then click on Run the troubleshooter. See what it says. Also run Microsoft memory diagnostics. Since you built the Computer your computer yourself also try reseating the memory modules to ensure they are inserted properly.Make sure they click into place.

@simplyzachariah   Did you build this system yourself or was it built for you? If you biutlt it yourself did you check to see if the mother board has the latest bios? When computer parts are manufactured the software may be out of date by the time the product is sold. The M2 memory modules have microcode and it is a good idea to check the manufacturer support site to make sure there are no patches for your ssd system storage device (ssd). A new install of Windows operating system may not have all sub systems installed to play all software. Does the game  start and play. A BSOD is just one result of a system crash. There are many more reasons a computer may crash. Thius game checks for the video system in your computer. It may not be identified by the game correctly. Have you tried running a video benchmark program like 3dmark. If other programs crash then you probably have a system issue and not a game issue.

Thank you for the help. My husband built the system, I'm a little outdated on the hardware side these days but I have a general idea what I am doing, better with software.

Last night when I hit the wall I got frustrated and we went ahead and completely wiped the system to start from scratch. Once windows was reinstalled and running we updated all drivers for hardware and then I installed Origin and the Sims base game this morning. While I was in the game, unbeknownst to me, Origin automatically starting installing my expansions. The game stayed on with little to no issues from about 9am-130pm.

I closed out of the game and reentered, now with all the expansions installed and functioning, and the game crashes and closes itself within a few minutes. So, no BSODs anymore, just a plain game crash. Drops me back to my desktop.

I think the windows wipe and reinstall fixed whatever may have been going on with my drivers/windows itself but now I'm having an issue with the expansions. I believe my copy of my old Users folder from my old computer may have corrupted something. Its not something I did on this recent wipe.

The only other thing I have installed was Chrome, after both crashes, so I could get back to this page and write my update.

I've attached a fresh DxDiag file.

    Any suggestions?
