Camera controls do not work

Recently downloaded the game to give it a go again, and for some reason the camera isn't moved by wasd or arrows, instead I can only move it to the right with "backspace" and down with "tab", which sadly blocks me from entering fps mode too.

Tried repairing, uninstalling and installing again, repairing that installation, removing the folder Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 and rebooting too, but nothing works.

Is there a way to get the default keybindings working again?

  • Apparently it was caused by a keyboard layout, downloading one for the same kind of layout but different language in Windows fixed my issue.

  • Having similar issue where I try to use the control + wasd to tilt and the w zooms in and wont do anything else after a while, the a doesnt do anything and then slowly more and more of the keyboard camera controls start malfuctioning. Really appreciate all help asap as going away for a while and this game will be the only source of relief from horrible situation!

Sorry if I am being really stupid here, but please could you say your answer in another way (explain more?) or something as I do not quite understand what you mean - you downloaded another what? I understand keyboard layout and language but for some reason am failing to catch your meaning of what the solution process is (and what the exact cause might be). Thank you for posting the answer - please anyone who gets it please help me! 🙂

@Lollimusic89 I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that we do not have the same issue, as the controls never really worked for me until I switched layout, probably had a corruption in the first layout so it didn't act properly. If your controls go away one by one it's probably not the same issue as mine, though, I'll give you some instructions.

For clarity, these steps are for win10, and as such have nothing to do with the game.

Start by opening your Settings, then find Time & Language, and then you should have Language on the left menu, on that page, you have preferred languages. In the options for those you have keyboards, and, for every preferred language you can have different keyboards.

The solution I found for my problem was to add a second preferred language with the same keyboard chosen as the one I was already using, and for some reason that just worked.

As an example, if you are using English (us) as preferred language, you can add English (uk) as a secondary which should not impact more or less anything as you should still have system language and so on set to English (us), but in this case, even if it were to switch you should have no problem switching back as English is pretty much the same no matter what country. After adding a second preferred language you simply go into options on that one and add keyboard, and select the one that matches your current keyboard, US qwerty for example, and then you just use either the language thing next to your clock, or you use Windows key + Space to select the other, same layout.

I think that should be plenty to go on to reproduce my solution, but as I said, we might not have the same problem. I'd recommend you to look through your Ease of Access part of Settings and make sure you look at the keyboard settings there as you might have executed a shortcut while gaming, a common problem since way back.

Other than that, I don't know really, so, good luck!
  • Ran into this issue today on my new computer (about 1 month old now). Everything worked, except the camera wouldn't respond to the alpha keys.

Can confirm that @Lollimusic89 solution works. My system is in English, but I live in Denmark and use a Danish keyboard, so Windows 10 set my language to "English (Denmark)" which Sims 4 and many other programs don't know what is (this is only a problem with programs that ask Windows for the current language/input settings, which most games don't). Windows 10 include a bunch of language/region presets that don't exist on older systems and as such aren't considered standard per se in programming.

In order for Sims 4 to work properly, I added English (United States) and English (United Kingdom) with Danish keyboard and regional settings. Either one works. You should be able to use either of the language/regional settings Sims 4 recognize (I don't know if there's a list of those anywhere). Only for me to have Danish regional settings with US/UK language, the English (Denmark) preset needs to be installed. Be aware of that if you use/need a settings combo MS don't consider "normal".

I actually removed the US and UK English settings a week ago because I thought I didn't need them, but apparently Sims 4 disagrees.

It is worth noting that when you have multiple languages enabled in windows, ctfmon.exe will run constantly. This is a tiny tsr that runs the language bar and makes it possible to change the system language on the fly, but if you ever look at the event log you may occasionally come across entries or alerts for ctfmon. This is normal.
