Can I play a mod on one save without it affecting another?

Hi!

So I really wanted to use a mod on one of my save files without it affecting any of my other save files since I'm worried it won't work. The mod adds a custom career and adjusts some interactions and I only want it to do that for the one save.

Basically, if I install a mod and load my game, will it impact my other save files if I haven't clicked on them and loaded them too? And if I wanted to play with one of the other saves, could I remove the mod from the mods folder and load the game without it losing my progress on the save I want it on (as long as it put it back before playing it)?

Sorry if this makes no sense!

  • @Zoeaa123  A mod won't affect a save unless that save is loaded.  And its absence won't affect a save that's used it unless that save is loaded.  So yes, you could do exactly as you've described.

  • I cannot say it wouldn't, but a simple solution to your wish is to make two separate user folders - one for mods and one without. The content inside the user folder does not affect the content in other user folders.

The user folder is called The Sims 4, and is located on your computer through this path: Documents>Electronic Arts>The Sims 4.

By naming them differently, the game cannot read them; so to have several, you just name them each a recognizable name, for you, and keep the one you currently want to play named just: The Sims 4.

This is how my Electronic Arts folder look like, my computer is in swedish, but I'm sure you understand it anyway. :

Here is a detailed description of how to create a new folder:

Please ask if you need more guidance. 🙂

  • Hi!

I have never used mods before and I was wondering how to update them after a game update. Do I simply download the new version from the mod creator's website, put it into my mods folder and remove the old one? Will this ruin my sim's progress as the mod I wanted adds a custom career?

@Zoeaa123  Yes to the first part of the question, with the addition of clearing any cache recommended by the particular modders of your chosen mods, usually that is localthumbcache.package. I don't use custome careers, but perhaps someone else will know.

Sometimes mods can permanently change saves; so if you want to be certain, testing on a copy of your save, in a new folder, would be a good way of making sure for yourself what to do.

EDIT: Just to make sure you know - removing the mod folder before updating would be the prudent way.
