I have no mods, everything in my game has worked perfectly, then I go to try gardening for the first time and this happens.  So first created an outdoor "room" by placing a flat square from the walls menu outside against my house.  I then surrounded it with hedges.  I then went to the outdoor floor patterns and placed the out to pasture grass pattern over the whole area.  I am unable to plant in the ground in this area.  I have read other forums that are "solved" but I have new evidence that differs from the other posts.  OCCASIONALLY, I'll get the option to plant.  Basically I can plant all over my lot as long as it isn't in the outdoor room I created.  Anything I place it in the outdoor room the only option is to eat.  BUT, if I just keep dragging it out onto the untouched lot then back into the outdoor room, about 1/50 times it will give me the option to plant.  I wouldn't mind planting it outside the outdoor room but I can't put and fences around it so it just looks stupid.  No point in having it if it doesn't fit the decor.

I'm really hoping I'm just doing something wrong, like maybe there is a different way to make an outdoor garden. idk, its 3a.m. so sorry if anything is unclear, I'll hope on tomorrow and clear anything up.

  • building a room creates a room, which is always classed as indoors, even with a fence around it.

however, all is not lost. if you go into build mode and delete the fence and the flooring, you can rebuild it using the fence tool. the screen attached shows where to click, and the top icon on the right builds fences like the wall tool builds walls. the outside area will still be classed as outside, and you'll be able to plant inside the fences 🙂

  • Oh then the bug is the opposite of what I thought.  Because occasionally it would give me the option to plant it in the room on the ground.  It was very rare though, it happened a couple times but I forgot to take a screenshot and I couldn't get it to happen again.  It was late so there is a chance I was just seeing things but I'm fairly certain it did give me the option.

Edit: Wait....I just encountered the problem.  So I created the fenced enclosure instead and it had the grey flooring.  It would let me plant on the grey floor, but as soon as I added the "out to pasture grass" flooring, I could no longer plant in the ground.  So how am I supposed to get a fenced in garden with grass as the ground instead of concrete?

Edit: Okay last edit I promise.  I got it now.  So if you created a fenced in enclosure connected to your house it automatically adds a floor.  For some reason you can plant on the default floor? But if you use the sledgehammer on the floor to remove it then you will have the regular grass and be able to plant.  I really hope I'm not the only one who struggled this much with this lol.

you're not the only one 😉 I struggled with it too when I first started playing around with fences. confused me so much I almost gave up on having a fenced garden (didn't like that idea at all). it's one of those 'once you know, it's easy' things, but before then, nope. it took me a while to discover that the fence tool works different, and the flooring works in a weird way.

glad you're all good though and you got everything working 🙂
