I do think they can die in fires. What happens afterwards is strange though. There was another thread on Sims dying and being resurrected.

The problem with this report is that you're using mods. Are you able to repro this on a vanilla game as well ?

    Yeah, especially if you're using MCCC I need stuff tested on vanilla. That mod changes a lot.
