game keeps crashing

game keeps crashing since the last update

  • @Nymirri  All the content you moved is still intact, so you can restore it now, including your save if you want.  It's unlikely that your builds would cause crashing on their own, but please still test them.  They're in Tray, and you can transfer the entire Tray folder (deleting the new one in your new Sims 4 folder) or drag and drop the files inside.  Saves are in the saves folder, naturally, and the only other folders possibly of interest are Mods, Screenshots, and Recorded Videos.  In case you're curious about the other files and folders, here's a summary:

If you use mods or custom content, I would test those files first, since they're the most likely to cause crashes.  You can test them in batches, or if you have a lot of files, use the 50/50 method:

  • @dee15644  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, if it launches, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If that doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

@puzzlezaddict I have completed your steps above and the game seems to run just fine. I even performed similar actions in case it was the new crystal stuff pack, but it has yet to crash. Only thing is am I now tied to this new game? I have builds I'd like to add back. Not so attached to the character as I had just changed to a new one.

Thank you so much for your help! Everything is working well so far, and I copied "Tray" into the Sims 4 folder and have all my builds.

One day later and the game is crashing again... I am continuing to play this version as I played many hours before it vanished.  I have been at the gemology table each time.  Not selecting the table but my char is actively using it.  I am not sure if I've been accessing inventory while this happens, but I will try to note the environment if it occurs again.  The game ran for about an hour in free play (not commands executed by me) and had no issues.

Further to the scenario - still crashing ... this time while at an NPC's home.

Note: I have never used a Mod nor do I have any installed. My laptop is getting older, no idea if the stuff pack or updates require a new graphics card or anything else...  Going to clear sims 4 again.

  • @Nymirri  I'm sorry, I never saw your edited post and didn't know you were still having issues.  How is the game running now?  If you still need help, please post a dxdiag.

@puzzlezaddictSorry, I decided to start a new game entirely. It was a glitch in the character, I think. The jobs tab was blank for her, and any time I used her the game crashed. I am using the same build with no issues at all. Could also be my saves etc. were just getting too large for my old PC heh. my library was very, very full as I like to build and when I do I save new every complicated adjustment. This is a holdover from the Sims 3 issues that were rampant for me.
I am okay with a new game. Not the first time. Thank you , though!
