Solved

Game opens but keeps closing after I open it again.

The game doesn't close completely but I think the resolution is broken. I reinstalled the game, reinstalled the cc I had, removed the broken cc that corrupted my save files (OOF RIP) and reloaded the game as new. This time out of all the times I have reinstalled the game, it will NOT load up. The game opens and doesn't crash but closes the window constantly. It doesn't stop running at all but it acts like it can't show up on my screen and it's been pissing me off for a good long while now. This same problem has cursed me for over 5 years. Please for the love of cripes, tell me what I can do to make it stop.

  • @netherkrow  Please test with no mods or custom content present, as in, move the entire Mods folder to the desktop and delete localthumbcache.package.  Among other things, it's possible a CurseForge mod hasn't been updated to be compatible with this week's patch.

If you still can't play with zero mods or cc present, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If that doesn't help either, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

@xo_noahs_ox  Please also try the clean folder, as described above, and if it doesn't make a difference, post a dxdiag as well.

  • I've had a similar issue. It started last night when I downloaded the new update onto my PC and before I had done that I had no issues. When I try to open the game it just closes the window and doesn't show up at the bottom as if I had accidentally pressed the windows key. It has really annoyed me too because I have done what everyone had been saying about, like turning my PC off, repairing the game, removing my mods/cc, etc. and nothing seems to help.

Yeah not only that, but it works one day then doesn't the next even without the update. I swear it has something to do with the steam version vs the EA desktop. I've tried it on both my internal and external SSDs. Both had mods operating correctly. One was corrupted but I removed it without regrets. I even ran the game without cc and it worked for a time but I tried uploading a sim to the cloud and it kept loading as if my account was just stalling. Oh yeah all my saves were gone after the last game window problem. That was when all my mods suddenly said eff you and corrupted everything. At least all my crap is uploaded so I can re-install them. This wasn't during or after the mod malware situation either. I had updated crap but I ran a diagnostic software from curseforge itself and nothing was malicious. Every mod I have I trusted the authors. It saddens me to say I have to go on another hiatus from the game because of the same problem for years.

Oh also, I have requested an uninstall/reinstall button for curseforge so we don't have to go through our mods one by one to remove them. I've just been tearing them out of the folder itself which worked without exceptions for a while until recently. No wonder it's corrupted. Guess I ripped them too hard <_<

I ended up doing this because I ended up finding your post on someone else’s post. I did this and things worked fine.

So i then started added my mods and cc back into the game but when I went back into game everything was glitchy and taking ages to load up and when it did I kept getting pop ups from BetterExceptions saying I had issues with mods.

Everytime I would come out of game and remove that mod or cc go back into game and it would do the same thing with almost all my cc and mods I had.

I know this isn’t down to EA as it is from other simmers who have created the added content. But I’m just disappointed because I’ve not had any issues with mods and cc like this where I keep getting kicked out of the game.

I can normally tell if my cc or mods are out of date due to the game menu having weird boxes when I try to exit - which doesn’t actually happen. It’s just like the game is in a very bad resolution and takes an age to load. I don’t have much mods or cc so it’s not like that’s causing it to slow either.

@puzzlezaddict The updates for curseforge were successful despite a modified/corrupted notification being present for half of them. I successfully uninstalled and reinstalled all of them except some. I kept some out as I had no need for them and they took up space. I didn't see anymore corruption or modification notifications since then. Right now it is about a 30% chance of starting the game up and keeping the window open without it opting out of the screen again. This usually happens when I restart my computer after changing some things of course but it has gotten better so far.

I will test without mods or cc and do what you said for the thumbnailcache.package real quick right now, however, I'm going to test the game as I have the cc, not save, and then exit completely after unchecking custom content in settings.

(This forum is still open leave it alone)

@puzzlezaddict Ok I'm about to test my game without mods enabled. I would like to know where my save files are so that I can just delete them. I've had all of my sims uploaded to the gallery and I think it'll be fine, all of those mods worked perfectly fine on those sims and I've had all the mods since I've made those. I deleted some of the mods like I said that I think gave me problems. The only thing I'm worried about reinstalling is a pants mod(good clothes I found) and a hair mod from another author. They are constantly updating so I trust them.

But yeah, again, like I said, I am not worried about my save getting lost. I have everything backed up and I treat the whole world in sims as if it's something I can build up and play around with. Progress isn't my interest unless it's in the moment.

This helped very much. My game works now. I even have created a vanilla save so I can go back to playing vanilla when I want to and I can just delete a save if they get corrupted again. I no longer need help this forum should close soon. Thanks again 🙂

@netherkrow  That's great to hear.  Your saves are here:

Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > saves

And you can drag the entire folder to the recycle bin if you want.  The game will create a new one.

On this forum, threads don't typically get locked unless they're old or cover a specific widespread issue that has now been resolved.  If you don't want to keep up with this thread, you can probably just ignore it, and there's a good chance no one else will post.  Unsubscribe if you don't want notifications.
