    Update:

Thankfully, this doesn't seem to be an every update issue as I feared it might be. Given you at least updated to the September 22 patch, playing offline should work for now. I was just able to launch the game offline without updating to the latest patch, and it authenticated fine.

QuinoaFalafel  catamorphmagus  To be clear, you haven't updated yet; you merely went online in Steam so that Steam recognized that an update was pending?  It's possible that this is seen as a mandatory update, which happens with the EA App sometimes—it's no longer possible to launch Sims 4 without installing the update.  I don't know whether this particular update qualifies, but if Steam won't let you launch the game without updating, there may not be a way around it.

If you can't play while offline after updating, let me know.  And if you know of other people with that issue, please ask them to post here so the problem can get escalated.  But I doubt anyone on the EA side would investigate if this only happens without updating, since only the current Sims 4 build is supported at any given time.

puzzlezaddict Yep, this does seem to be the case. I hope that EA will officially confirm that, since most players who use mods prefer to wait several days before updating the game. (In fact, on Discord servers we strongly suggest that they wait, since the alternative is people immediately re-enabling script mods and breaking their games.) Thank you for your insight!
