Game(s) Keep Exiting out of Fullscreen

Ever since I installed the new Sims 4 update I haven't been able to actually play. I can load the game up and play but every four or five seconds, it kicks me out of the fullscreen app and back to the desktop and while I can click on the Sims 4 icon in the task bar and go back into it, after another four-six seconds it kicks me out of the application again and back to my desktop once more. This has obviously rendered the game unplayable. I noticed this is also happening with Sims 2 but once I get into a household thankfully it stops. The thing is, ever since I built this PC last month I've had this happen sometimes when I load a fullscreen app, the difference however, is that it used to only do it a few times but then finally let me stay in the fullscreen app indefinitely as it should. And other times simply restarting the PC fixed the issue. Therefore, I never considered it a real bug until now when it's doing it seemingly endlessly no matter how many times I restart the PC and/or the game. Could it have something to do with graphics and/or monitor settings? My monitor is an LG one and it used to display this annoying message about "please use the supplied input cables" and I noticed this message would often make any fullscreen app I was in send me back to the desktop, so I figured out online I could use this joystick under the monitor to turn it off by selecting the "dont show again" option under the message that was unaccessible by mouse cursor and required said joystick. This message never showing up anymore actually greatly reduced this happening to fullscreen apps. But now its happening worse than ever after this new TS4 update. While the monitor message is gone I still do sometimes get this "HDR" icon thing pop up on the right hand side of the monitor for a few seconds, especially when loading into fullscreen games. Could this be a problem too? If it is I have no idea how to stop it from happening. Any ideas on what's going on here and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • @neoromanempire  Try disabling notifications, under Windows Settings > System > Notifications & actions.  The first option is a master switch.  I'm not saying you have to leave it off indefinitely, only that this is a useful test.

If that doesn't help, disable any apps you use that come with overlays: Discord, Steam, etc.  Disable the EA App in-game overlay too, under Settings > Application.

If that doesn't help either, please put Sims 4 in windowed mode and let me know whether it still minimizes.  Since the game won't stay open, you'll need to edit Options.ini, in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4.  Search for fullscreen and set it to 0 (zero).

Whether or not windowed mode helps, please also run a dxdiag and attach it to your reply.

Yeah nothing worked except putting it in windowed mode which I did by going into properties and adding -w at the end of the target. Im telling you its the LG monitor's "HDR" pop up that is causing it, it nearly exclusively happens immediately when the HDR pop up shows up. This is so annoying. Would really like to be able to use it in fullscreen again.

Heres the dxdiag while running in windowed mode.

@neoromanempire  Editing Options.ini to force windowed mode should have accomplished the same thing; I'm not sure why that setting wouldn't have held.  The -w command line argument overrides the in-game setting, but there's nowhere else the in-game setting would be saved.

At any rate, all of the crashes in your dxdiag are of one component or another of LG's On Screen Control software.  There's a newer version (9.35) than your currently installed one (9.28) available, and you can get it here:

    https://www.lg.com/us/support/product/lg-27GN950-B.AUS?tab=1

But please uninstall it first and test Sims 4 without it present, and only then install the newest version, that is if you want to use it.

Let me know whether the pop-ups go away with the software removed, and if so, whether they return with the newest version installed.

Oh I didn’t even attempt to edit options.ini. I just forced it into windowed mode using the target -w method because that’s an easy way I’ve done before that I already knew how. Okay yeah I’ll download that newer version later.

Downloading the newer version did not work. I think the problem is actually I never set my monitor up right, apparently it needs a usb a to c cable from my monitor to pc to actually connect to my monitor on and driver and software level. I ordered one that is coming tomorrow and I will update you on if doing that and ensuring my monitor is properly connected software wise with my pc and it's lg applications will fix anything or atleast improve the situation somewhat.
