From the steps you described, it definitely sounds like you created a new account.
Try locating your account by searching for the purchase confirmation email in your various inboxes, and once located log back in with that e-mail address as the username. If you can't locate the e-mail, I suggest you try logging in with your various e-mails anyway: many people contacted me who had mistakenly deleted their purchase confirmation e-mail (not a good idea!)
