How to make my game less laggy?

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
I want to talk about something you don't mention above:
How accessible is the current experience? Annoying, but OK
Summarize what in the product is difficult to use. I was wondering how I should upgrade my computer. My CAS is OKAY and so is build/buy, but during live mode. OH MY GOD. The lag is unreal and makes me not want to play anymore. So my question is: should I get a new graphics card or an ssd? And if so, which ones are good for sims 4 that aren't super expensive. I'm not super knowledgeable about computers so any advice is good advice to me. My specs: AMD A8-6410 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics 2.00 GHz
How is this making it more difficult? It's very unenjoyable.
How can we reproduce this experience? Nothing on EA's end.

My specs:

AMD A8-6410 APU with AMD Radeon R5
Graphics 2.00 GHz

RAM: 4 GB (3.44 GB usable)

  • @jaida7177  The limiting factor is probably your installed memory, not necessarily the graphics card and almost certainly not the hard drive.  4 GB RAM isn't really enough for Sims 4 to run well these days, and having that little memory could explain all of the lag you're seeing.  You could probably add at least another 4 GB to your laptop—most models would support an upgrade.  One easy way to check is to go to this site and either enter your model number or let the site scan your computer.

Adding more memory can be cheap, as you'll see from the Crucial list of supported memory, and is fairly straightforward.  But your graphics chip would still be quite weak for the game.  I doubt your laptop would support any kind of dedicated graphics card, as most models that don't come with one already installed don't have the space or the connections for a proper GPU.  While you might not have lag anymore, you'd still need to run the game on lower settings, and you might see delays in rendering and other graphics glitches.

A solid state drive would speed up the load times by a significant amount, but it wouldn't change how the game runs once it's loaded (except of course if there's a problem with your existing hard drive, but it doesn't sound like there's any reason to think that's true).  So while Windows would run faster, and apps would load more quickly, you wouldn't get the benefit you're looking for.

Given how you feel about the performance of this laptop currently, you might want to think about how much you really want to spend on it.  Entry-level gaming laptops can cost $600 or less these days (at least in the U.S.; prices are higher in other countries), and the experience of playing on one would be significantly better than the best possible performance you could get out of your current laptop.

In the mean time, your laptop will do best if it doesn't have to run anything else (besides Origin) while you play.  Restart your computer, open Origin, and launch the game, but don't open any browser windows or even a music app, and see how it goes.
