Is SSD (Solid State Drive) necessary for The Sims 4?

Hi everyone!

I (a few days ago) placed an order for a new Alienware laptop (primarily for playing The Sims 4) with the following specs;

Base
Alienware 17 R3
Processor
Intel® Intel® Core™ i7-6820HK (Quad-Core, 8MB Cache, Dynamically Overclocked up to 4.1GHz)
Operating System
Windows 10 Home 64bit English, Dutch, French, German, Italian
Video Card
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980M with 8GB GDDR5
LCD
17.3 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS-Panel Anti-Glare 300-nits Display
Memory
16GB Dual Channel DDR4 2133MHz (8GBx2)
Hard Drive
1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s

When customising the system, it gave me the option to have the existing Hard Drive plus a SSD Drive as well. At the time, to be really honest, I didn't even know what an SSD was and just chose the traditional Hard Drive that you see in the specs. Only after processing the order (it has already been produced and is on the way to me) I did some research on what SSD's are and now I'm wondering if I made a mistake...?

I understand that loading times and game saves with an SSD will be shorter because data is retrieved quicker. To be honest I don't mind the loading screens because even on my four year old laptop they are pretty quick. I do really want a laptop that enables me to play at the highest graphics options, and play on heavily populated lots without any lagging. My current laptop was great but as I've added all the expansions and packs it's actually become almost unplayable - particularly on heavily populated lots or when time speeds up it just becomes unbearably slow.

Do you think that what I've ordered will give me perfect/flawless gameplay in the game? Would having an SSD improve any other aspects of The Sims 4? (other than loading and save times)

  • I think that is enough. SSD's are nice but not necessary.

So, if it's easy to change the order and it won't be too expensive, why not but if you have to go out of your way to change, leave it at that.
