Legacy Edition on new laptop?

Hi guys! 🙂

It's been almost 11 months since I have been unable to play my game and I can genuinely blame it on my laptop. The poor thing has carried me right through from The Sims 2 right up until when I couldn't even load my game anymore.

I didn't have any serious issues with using the Legacy Edition when I was first forced to install it (I did have a 32-bit laptop). I was just happy to still being able to play the game on the old hag. Out of the blue, that ability suddenly stopped. With Covid-19, unemployment and some serious medical issues, I have only now started contemplating buying myself a new laptop (the old lady won't even power up anymore)

My question is: If I do buy a new laptop, which supports all of the recommended system requirements, will I still be forced to download the Legacy Edition because it is on my current origin account? Am I going to have to see the Legacy Edition pop up on my screen every time I repair or update my game?

I'm considering just making a brand new origin account and start new, since Legacy Edition didn't allow for much EPs etc anyways, but that is still a lot of money I'll be losing.

  • @naekinap  The Legacy Edition will likely download onto your new laptop even if you initially choose not to install it.  The way it works is that the entire standard game downloads, plus the LE installs as an add-on much like other packs.  However, you'll still be able to instruct Origin to launch the standard version instead.  If you want the LE removed from your account so it doesn't download at all, you can contact EA customer support, but since it's a relatively small download, it might not be worth the trouble.

Just so you know, some new lightweight laptops have ARM processors in them and run a 64-bit version of Windows but do not support 64-bit gaming; these would also be limited to running the Legacy Edition of Sims 4.  So if you're not sure what to make of the specs of a new system, feel free to link it here.  You can also link laptops you're considering for a second opinion on how they'd handle Sims 4, or ask for general advice if you're not sure where to start.

Thank you! I suspected as much. So if I do install LE as an add-on, and just set my game properties to launch the Standard 64-bit edition everything will be fine? I'd have access to the gallery and newer EPs?

Understandable. I've been considering buying the Asus Vivobook 15 OLED. It has AMD Ryzen 7, 512 GB SSD, AMD Radeon Graphics and 8 GB RAM - to put it shortly. It feels like buying a new car as I've gone back and forth so many times before. I'm not an active gamer and only play Sims which is why I haven't considered a gaming laptop or PC setup. My career keeps me busy so I only play when I do have the time. Which is why it took me 11 months to consider buying a new laptop 🙂

    Yes, exactly.

A laptop with a Ryzen 7 4th- or 5th-gen processor should also be able to handle medium-high or high graphics settings, even with all packs installed, so it's a good option for someone who doesn't want a gaming laptop.  Its screen is excellent too, but be careful about potential burn-in.
