Low FPS and Lag on 1.102.190.1030 version

I haven't updated my game since July 2023 and today when I finally decided to update it to 1.102.190.1030, the FPS only caps at 24 even on map mode. Here are the things I've done so far:

- remove all mods

- let the game recreate new electronic arts folder

- update my graphic cards

- start a new save file

- play on windowed mode

None of them seem to work. I know I'm using an old laptop but before update I usually got around 40fps with no issue. I've attached my dxdiag just in case anyone could help me, thank you!

  • @thatnoel  Your dxdiag lists a number of BlueScreens.  Are these happening while you're playing Sims 4, and if not, what context?  It's difficult to say whether the underlying issue is also affecting the game.

The dxdiag also crashed while running, which isn't a great sign.  So please run a couple of basic checks of your Windows system files:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes into the window, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes into the window, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Finally, please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the AMD graphics driver.  The driver itself is the wrong version number—not the newest one AMD offers for your processor and graphics chip—and the dxdiag is also missing a lot of information about this driver.  Here's how to cleanly remove the driver:

You can get the last AMD driver for your graphics chip here:

I got some bluescreens a couple of times 1-2 years ago when trying to fix my laptop (forgot what for) since then I've never got anymore bluescreens until now.

Here's the check result after I reinstalled my graphics driver:

    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool Version: 10.0.19041.3636

    Image Version: 10.0.19045.3693

    Also:

    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>

@thatnoel  You're getting BlueScreens now, or else Windows Error Reports hasn't recorded another error in a year or two (vanishingly slim chance) or the dxdiag can't read the newer reports (possible).  The question is whether they're happening while you play.  It's possible that they happen at shutdown and you don't notice, in which case they're probably not related to the Sims 4 issue but still worth investigating.

How does Sims 4 run with the new graphics driver installed?

    @puzzlezaddict

I've never encountered bluscreens when I played sims before, but today as I started the game there was a pop up that said:

    "AMD Bug Report Tool

We detected a blue screen has occurred on your system. A bug report has been generated. This report could help AMD find a solution. Would you like to report the issue?"

I got additional 5-8fps with the new updated driver, but the improvement is still nowhere close to before the 1.102.190.1030 update.

Also, now the in-game lime color seems to be broken (see attached picture) probably due to changes in AMD settings? Do you know how to fix this?

@thatnoel  That doesn't look great, but it could be a driver issue or a more general system issue or something else.  I'd rather see what the BlueScreens are about and go from there.

For that, open a File Explorer window and enter C:\Windows\Minidump in the address bar.  For the most recent two or three crash dumps, right-click the files and select Copy, then right-click the desktop and select Paste.  From there, you can zip the files together, upload the .zip to a third-party filehosting site (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.), and link it here.
