Moved Sims 4 folder to desktop and have now lost all game data?

I couldn't get Sims 4 to open by origin, it would load and then choose to do nothing. I searched it up and found another post with the same issue and so I followed their chosen solution which was to move the 'The Sims 4' folder from EA Games folder onto desktop. I did it and now all of my game data is gone and it's like the game's been reset. How do I fix it? Please help.

UPDATE: I have removed all 332 items of CC that I downloaded today and it still wouldn't work. Today is the first time that I had downloaded CC since I was last on the Sims. None of my CC from today is the issue.

  • When you move the Sims 4 folder from the Electronic Arts folder to the desktop, and launch the game again, you are basically doing a factory reset of the game. It starts the game fresh like it's newly installed.

Your user data isn't actually gone, it's backed up to the desktop. - C:\Users\Username\Desktop\The Sims 4. -- For example, if you look in your Sims 4 Saves folder, you should see your save files in it.

Read more about a factory reset from the article with this link: https://sims4.crinrict.com/en/2014/09/resetting-the-game-to-factory-settings-without-reinstalling/

If you move or rename the Sims 4 folder, the game will no longer be able to find it. When you go to launch and play the game it will create a new Sims 4 folder.

If the game launches and plays okay, then you can start putting the files back. (List of files and folders below).

    - Options.ini (User game settings)
    - Tray Folder (Sims/Houses/Commercial lots and rooms)
    - Screenshots/Videos/Custom music
    - Saves Folder
(leave out slot_00000001.save which is the autosave. It is not used anymore.)
    - Custom content like clothing, hair, skins, and makeup
    - Mods (Put these back one by one to make sure they all still work)

By default, this is how you find your saved games:

-- Windows File Explorer you can find your Sims 4 user files with this path: C:\Users\Username\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4

    -- Saves games are in: C:\Users\Username\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\saves

In-game Click the Load Game button, Select a saved game. Mouse over or hover over the tiny folder under the game saves information. Like shown in the photo below:

You may need to search your computer to find where your documents or Sims 4 user files are located. To do this, click the Start button and in the search bar type in Sims 4 and follow the path that it shows you.

My saved games are NOT on my C drive. They automatically went to my external drive (F) which backs up to OneDrive. Which means I am also having the issues of OneDrive constantly updating the files as game is in play.  I am not wanting to disable OneDrive so hoping there are other options.  I am currently at the office and will try some other options this weekend. Thank you for your responses and help.

I edited my reply above to show by default where you can find your game saves.

Sims 4 and OneDrive do not work well together. Due to the game not recognizing saved games saved to One Drive. To get saves to be recognized they need to be in the game's save folder. - \Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\saves

You should be able to move the saves files from OneDrive to Sims 4\saves without to many issues. This may need to be done manually each time you want to use any saved games saved to OneDrive.

@172e3cda00349872   I think i may have it all FIXED.  Completely closed down SIMS and since my files were saved on an external drive, which was back up to onedrive I copied the Electronics arts folder to another LOCAL drive then unplugged the external drive. I then reopened SIMS game, saved a random new game, just to see where it was going to put it.  It was saved in PUBLIC\Public documents.  I then copied my original saved games folder and it merged with the new MAIN folder on my C drive (which is NOT backed up to OneDrive!) opened the game again adn WHA LA it stays on my c drive and I do not have to worry about OneDrive or turn it off of my regular External drive.
THANK YOU for helping me work this out.

I don’t get it.  I cant find the “new” sims folder. I only see one “The Sims 4” folder and it’s the one with all the copies and original files.  It still has nothing in the game when i open it.  I cant find the new folder that it created...

Hi. I recently cleaned up in my computer files and updated my game (sims 4) After that all my cc disappeared and it was like my whole game restarted. All my progress was gone. Now my cc doesn't work and i can't find the "map" called resource.cfg i think that's what it's called. Now it's not a map but just a document, so i can't put my downloads in there? What do I do?

OMG! Finally, after 6 MONTHS, I got my Sims 4 folder back. I had been so lost for so long. Turns out, I needed to do this:

    1. open Finder preferences on my Mac

          - have Finder open and on the top bar of your screen, hover over "Finder" and a drop down appears and click on "Preferences"

    2. go to sidebar

    3. there should be a little house icon with your name on it most likely, and check that box so it appears in your sidebar when you have Finder open

    4. find the documents folder in there - THAT IS THE DOCUMENTS FOLDER YOUR COMPUTER IS USING

It doesn't show up in the search bar for some reason. I had like 2 document folders. And the one I could see on my sidebar was the wrong one that didn't have a Sims 4 folder.

I hope this explanation helps someone out there. 🙂

I'm closing this thread to stop it being necroed.

If you have any issues with Sims 4 please make a new topic about the issues you are having and what kind of steps you have tried to solve it.
