My The Sims 4 game reset itself

I haven’t played the game in quite some time and today when I opened it everything was gone and I only had the “Start a new world” option as if I’ve never played it before. My saves folder is empty, I tried looking for the saves somewhere else on my computer but didn’t find anything. I tried restoring the previous version of the saves file but there were no previous versions. My windows file backup is turned off too. I thought that maybe I deleted the saves by accident, but there is nothing in my recycling bin, because I emptied it not so long ago. When I tried restoring deleted items from the bin after emptying it nothing worked. Is my the sims world gone for good then?

@idk55555 Are you launching the game through Origin or the EA app? Please run your computer's dxdiag - how to collect dxdiag data   Then attach the created text (.txt) file to the paper clip in the lower right of the forum response window.

  • @idk55555  Is OneDrive running on this computer (whether you use it or not), and if so, do you see any Sims 4-related files in OneDrive's version of Documents?

You can also search your computer for your missing saves.  Open a File Explorer window, click This PC in the left panel, and enter Slot_ in the search field in the upper-right corner.  If there are any saves elsewhere on your computer, this should turn them up.  If you find one, select it and click the "Open file location" menu button, and you'll jump to where that save is, and hopefully where all your other files are too.

In either case, you can move the files back to the relevant folders within Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, and the game should read them.

My OneDrive just says that it is empty and when I tried searching my computer for the missing saves, nothing turned up

@exotiqueee  Then it sounds like your saves are gone, unfortunately.  I know it doesn't help now, but this is why it's so critical to make backups of your essential files: you never know when a computer problem will delete something important.

Your dxdiag does show some failed Windows updates and a couple of errors related to Windows Defender.  I'm not saying you definitely have a virus, but it's a good idea to run a scan just to be on the safe side.  You can use the free version of Malwarebytes:

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download

Open it, click Scan > Custom Scan > Configure Scan, check all the boxes both for scans and for your C and D drives, and let it do its job.  This can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour depending on how much data there is to scan and whether Malwarebytes flags anything.  Feel free to upload the log for me to look at when it's done.

You can manually run Windows updates through Settings > Update & Security.

@idk55555  Malwarebytes found two different potentially unwanted programs (virus-like programs) and some adware.  For the PUPs, the Malwarebytes scan should have been sufficient to remove them completely, but I'd still run another scan just to be thorough.  When running it, make sure that no other apps are open, not even a browser.

For the adware, if you're using Chrome, I'd suggest following this guide, specifically the "how to remove malware" section, to make sure it's no longer affecting Chrome:

    https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/2765944?visit_id=638096979117696918-457505801&p=chrome_cleanup_tool&rd=2#zippy=%2Cremove-malware-from-your-computer-windows

You likely don't need to reset your browser settings, but that would be the next step if you can't get rid of the adware.
