new computer help please?

Hi all, so 11 years ago someone in the forums recommended a cyberpower pc build so that I could run sims 4....That computer has lasted me awesomely but it's time to upgrade. I am not super saavy on all the components and what plays nice with each other to do a custom build.

Could someone please recommend a good computer that will run sims 4, 3 and 2, awesomely from the cyberpower website? I prefer amd because that's what this computer has and I very rarely had issues. I'd like to keep my budget around 1500 could go up to 1700 or if it's super duper worth it I'd go to 2000 but Id rather not.

I'm just so confused by all of the options. I'm not sure which is a good motherboard and if I need a seperate wireless card etc. thanks so much if anyone is willing to help me!

Sims would be the only game I play on it but I sometimes edit photos and use the cricut design program

  • stormycurls  I would absolutely not get a standard HP gaming desktop.  (Omen desktops can be fine, depending on the current approach to building them.)  HP uses some proprietary components for these, meaning it's difficult to impossible to repair or upgrade certain parts of the system.  Plus, if you look at independent benchmarks, HPs tend not to get the performance you would expect out of the graphics card.  I don't know exactly why, but there's a clear pattern.

In terms of brands, it's always best to avoid a new one on the scene, as we have no idea about the quality control.  Dell and Acer have the same issues as HP with OEM components and lowered performance.  Asus ROG builds are generally good quality, as are Lenovo Legions, but both can be overpriced.

More often than not, the best bet is to buy from a well-known store (Best Buy, Amazon, etc.) that carries overflow stock from quality system integrators.  These can be cheaper because the SIs are trying to get rid of excess stock, and that stock is the same quality you'd buy if you were building yourself, it just didn't sell as well as the SI predicted.  (Or they took it as part of a bundle.)  But the SI build quality is still there.

Anyway, what do you think of this one?

It's overkill for Sims 4, even with all packs installed and a giant pile of custom content.  It's also cheaper than the other options in this performance category.  Everything I'm seeing up to at least $1,150 as the same GPU or an equivalent one, and at best a processor that's around 10% better, but those options start at $1,000, so you'd be paying more for a small upgrade that doesn't affect the game.  (Sims 4 would be GPU-bound if it were bound by the hardware at all, which it would not be in this case.)

If you want an upgrade to both components anyway, something like this would work:

I could keep going up in price, but you wouldn't see any difference in the game.  Still, if neither of these is what you want, let me know why, and I'll have another look.  There are lots of systems similar to these available for a bit more money.  I did check Amazon and Newegg too, but their selection is basically the same and the prices are slightly worse.

As for internet access, it's best to have a wired connection.  But you can use your existing wifi adapter for now if you want, or get a new one of good quality for relatively cheap, maybe $20.  If you do specifically want a motherboard with wifi built in, that's usually impossible to get on these sites because they won't promise you a particular board.  But there are sites that let you choose, not just Cyberpower, so I can take a look at those too.  The price will go up though, a lot more than getting a better wifi adapter.

Fengjui   HP doesn't sell Cyperpower PCs.  Cyberpower is a system integrator, meaning they buy components in bulk and build the computer for you.  Also, a proper gaming desktop for Sims 4 can cost under $1,000 U.S., not anywhere near $5,000.
