one game affects another?

I made one sim family and then the next day my mother created another family and when I went back to play with my sims it seemed like it was still going. My sim was pregnant when I saved it last and when I went back after my mother played hers my sim had the baby!!! Why would this happen? I thought when you created a new family the other family isn't affected at all until you go play that one.
