Problems switching households in sims 4?

Hi I've had sims 4 for only a few days now. I've created 2 families and I play with them both frequently however recently it wont let me switch households. It gives me the option to resume playing my current family but when I try to play the other household it only allows me to play one of the sims and it wont let them return home. When I go to the menu the "manage worlds" button is grey and it says "manage worlds and switch household are not available in this mode". So how can I get out of whatever mode this is?
