Do you have any mods or CC (custom content)? Try taking that out.

- Good idea but I don't have any mods. Just the Work and City Living expansions. And my game is up to date. Thankfully this doesn't happen every time...
Could you try letting your Sim leave early from work?
That's a great idea, I didn't even realize it was possible (it's been a long time since I've played so I'm re-learning). I'll try that next time it gets stuck!
Just try opening up the cheats console and typing resetsim firstname lastname.That usually works when my sims get stuck at work.
