Re: [CURRENT ISSUE] Sims 4 saves/user content disappearing (PC)

I'm having a similar issue but I think Microsoft Onedrive is the problem with mine. I got a message that my Onedrive was full and I would need to pay for additional space so I stopped sharing files with Onedrive yesterday. When I tried to play my game today it looks like a brand-new install of TS4 with no saved games. The folders for all my associated files for the Sims 4 were being saved to my documents folder in Onedrive instead of my "C" drive. Now I can't figure out how to tell my Sims game to use the actual Documents Folder instead of the Onedrive Documents folder. That's the part that I need help with.

@MeanXeno  I've moved your post to the master thread for this type of issue.  Please see the first post on page one, particularly the "I want to get rid of OneDrive" section.  The short answer is, Sims 4 uses the Documents folder that Windows has designated as the proper Documents directory.  Change the Windows setting and the game will follow.

Thanks for the help! That's all it took. It would still be nice to be able to tell the Sims 4 to save my savegames to a custom location though. I'm trying to keep all my game related content on a separate SSD from the Windows Default documents location. If you happen to know if there's a way to do that then please let me know.

@MeanXeno  You can create a symbolic link:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2020/02/moving-windows-documents-folder-to-external-drive-via-symbolic-link.html

If you get an error when running the second command, use the full file path rather than %UserProfile% as written.  For example, you'd probably be writing one of these:

    C:\Users\your username\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4

    C:\Users\your username\OneDrive\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4

You can right-click any file or folder and select Properties > General to find the full file path.

@Hannagrynt  I've merged your post with the master thread for this issue.  Please see the first post on page one.

My game ran fine last week. Everything is saved to path C:\Users\Public\Documents\Electronic Arts and has been since first install. Now the game is reading at C:\Users\rblbe\OneDrive\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4

I do not have OneDrive enabled. I keep turning it off and telling it not to sync.

Any idea how or why it moved? How do I make it go back? Do I just need to copy everything over to the new path? Can I just delete the onedrive path and hope the game finds the old path?

@Cyanide68 Edit: I did end up just deleting the OneDrive sims 4 folder, and it defaulted back to my usual path.
Any word on how to stop one drive being such an overbearing jealous ex? I've disabled it multiple times, turned off sync, deleted everything from it, etc. It just keeps coming back and screwing everything up.

@Cyanide68  If you unlink your Microsoft account, OneDrive won't be able to sign itself in.  Right-click the OneDrive icon in the lower-right corner of your screen and select Settings > Account, then click Unlink this PC.

To move the location of the Documents directory, please use this guide:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/operation-to-change-a-personal-folder-location-fails-in-windows-ffb95139-6dbb-821d-27ec-62c9aaccd720

Choose the default location, i.e. %USERPROFILE%\Documents , for the Personal value (the location of Documents).  Even OneDrive can't stop you from changing the registry value like this.

Thanks! We'll see if I can manage permanently breaking up with OneDrive.

The link for regedit might actually solve the issue I've been having with Nexus' Vortex, which I've been trying to solve since BG3 launched a few weeks ago and their help forums have been useless about.

Kudos for solving a problem you didn't even know about <3
