Re: Need help with new (secondary) SSD and how to move the Sims game to it
Hello (again) Puzzleaddict,
Have now finally received a new laptop:
Lenovo Legion Pro 7 / Ryzen 9 - 7945HX / RTX 4090 (mobile) / 32 GB RAM
(yes, I know...perhaps a bit of overkill for TS4...but hopefully future proof)
The original SSD (1TB) has only the Windows OS (ca. 45,1 GB) on it.
The second SSD (2TB) has been split into two partitions of 1TB each and is currently empty.
My idea was to use the 1st SSD (Cš, which came w/ the laptop, solely for the Windows OS & drivers.
The 2nd SSD now has a 1TB partition (Dš for documents, photos, music, etc. and a 1TB partition (Gš for games (w/ a subfolder: G:/games).
However, I'm not exactly 'technically advanced' and now seem to be stuck.
Have downloaded both the EA and Steam apps to the new laptop - both have landed automatically in C:
Have twice tried to download the Sims 4 game from Steam to my laptop, but each time it automatically ends up in: C:/users/alex/documents/electronic arts/the sims 4
When downloading the game from Steam, I'm never asked where I would like to have it (or shown where it is going to go).
How do I get the game from C:/users/alex/documents/electronic arts/the sims 4 to G:/games... ??
From what I understand, simply dragging it from the C: folder to the G: folder....or....cut & paste...wouldn't work...or would it?
I would like to simply continue playing my old game (from 02 Feb. 2023.....with ca. 25 homes & ca. 200 Sims and absolutely tonnes of CC) as though nothing had happened/changed.....but on the better/quicker setup. My TS4 folder itself currently has ca. 14,5 GB total, of which 13,7 GB are Mods & CC.
As I understand it, I can keep all my previous games/saves, etc. by simply copying the C: folder C:/users/alex/documents/electronic arts... from the old laptop on to a USB stick and then paste this into the new folder at G:/games/... (once I finally get the game itself to Gš. Or am I mistaken there....?
As always, many thanks in advance for the assist.
Alex
@AlexvonAuen There are a few issues here. Before doing anything else, I would actually suggest a different configuration entirely. Leave the 2 TB SSD intact, not partitioned, and use it for games, backups, whatever. This is simpler than trying to predict the size you'll want each partition to be, and you can't resize existing partitions without either erasing some data or paying for third-party software.
Instead, partition the C drive. Leave ~150 GB for the OS and drivers, and the rare app (like the EA App) that refuses to install anywhere else. Use the rest of the partition for Documents, Photos, etc. That will still be more than enough room, both for Windows and for your user files, and you won't be wasting the extra space of the primary drive.
I would also suggest uninstalling Sims 4, the EA App, Steam, and anything else currently on C with Revo Uninstaller (the free version is fine) just to have a completely clean slate. Revo will remove associated registry entries and other hidden files.
Once you've done that, move your user foldersāDocuments, Photos, etc.āto the new partition, let's call it E. Here's how to move Documents, but the process is the same for the others:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/74952-move-location-documents-folder-windows-10-a.html
Or if that's not working, here's how to force the issue:
Then install Steam itself on D, into a subfolder you create. (You don't want it directly on D.) Any game you download through Steam will install here by default:
[Steam location]\Steam\steamapps\common
You can change this by creating a new Steam library, but you won't have to if Steam itself is where you want it.
The EA App will insist on being on C, but it's relatively small by itself. You can choose the install location for your EA App games under Settings.
Once you launch Sims 4, it will automatically use the location you've set as the Documents directory. The reason it's not doing so now is probably that Windows still sees the Documents directory as on C, rather than the secondary location you created.
