A quick additional query: does it matter where I buy expansion packs? I have seen some bundles on EA Destop. Will they work on EA Play?

EA play is a subscription service anything you have through that will end as the subscription ends.
EA Desktop is in Beta and will eventually replace the Origin client. It does not matter where you buy the games/expansions. You will see the same bundles available in Origin.
Thank you. That is disappointing. The subscription service enables you to download the content to the PC so I was hoping I wouldn't lose stuff. Does anyone know if I can manually copy and transfer the save files from the EA Play version of Sims 4 to use them on the game bought via Origin? Probably a long shot...
The save files are stored locally so will not disappear.
You can make a backup to be absolutely sure nothing happens to them.
By default they are here. Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\saves
