That is almost always a sign the game crashed and the only way to get out of the application is to end it via Task Manager.

Here are a few things that you can try:

• Uninstalling and reinstalling Origin (Your games will still be installed and all that)
• Uninstalling and reinstalling the Sims 4
• Repairing the Sims 4 via Origin (Right-click the Sims 4 in your game library and click "Repair Game")
• Clear the Sims 4 cache
• Clear Origin's cache
