Save files lost-recovery methods not working

Hi, I have recently fully reset my PC, and after re-installing Sims 4, I noticed my game had lost progress. All saves associated with my most recent household played in the past couple of weeks before the reset has been lost, and the log-in reward event has reset back to the first week. I considered that this might be an issue related to OneDrive but I couldn't find any saves from 2024 in the OneDrive accounts that I checked (I used the search bar assuming that they began with 'Slot_' as all the game's save files seemed to have this at the start of their names), including their recycle bins.

I also checked generally by searching in file explorer, but could only find the 2022 saves from the other households within the Sims 4 folder. My older households and their saves from years ago seem to be intact, but I cannot find any of the saves anywhere from the specific and recent missing household, including when trying to load saves in the game's menu using the recover tool. Are there other options to try and recover it? Thanks

@jjki267876787765  Well that does mean you've found the right folder and the game is reading it.  I can't say for sure, but I would guess the problem had something to do with your unusual Documents location.  Since this could cause (more) issues going forward, I'd suggest you force Documents back to the default location of Users > your username > Documents, as described here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/operation-to-change-a-personal-folder-location-fails-in-windows-ffb95139-6dbb-821d-27ec-62c9aaccd720

Once you've done that, you can move the Electronic Arts folder from its current location into Documents, and at least OneDrive won't be able to interfere going forward.  I'd also suggest trying to recover any saves from 2024 that don't end in .save already; hopefully you'll be able to find at least some of your missing saves.

I would guess that OneDrive replaced newer files with older ones of the same name, rather than the other way around as it should have.  Your save files have such low numbers that you must have had others with those same names at some point, and I guess that point was in 2022.  The unfortunate part is that if there aren't any other 2024 saves in OneDrive's recycle bin, there's nowhere else to look, because the newer files were simply overwritten.

  • @jjki267876787765  Please post a screenshot or screenshots of any folders that contain Sims 4 saves—I'd like to see the file names themselves as well as their dates.  At the very least, that will make it easier for me to reference specific files, and I might notice some useful details that I wouldn't think to suggest you check.

If you want to do a thorough search of your computer, you can download Everything, from VoidTools, which is a free search tool that's much more efficient than Windows search.  If nothing else, you'll know you've located all the saves stored locally.

As for OneDrive, it may not be syncing right now at all, whether because you've disabled it or because it's full.  So the fact that it has no recent saves isn't necessarily a sign of a problem.

  • Here are the attached screenshots using Everything's search to locate all files that were available through it. All files have the same folder locations - seen in the full locations ending with 'saves' in one screenshot - except the one ending in 'Windows\Recent' in the second screenshot which I don't think is relevant because I recently continued with the older past household save recently. Therefore some 2024 saves have popped up which weren't there a few days ago when I didn't continue on that save yet. OneDrive seems to be syncing correctly as it has the 'Your files are synced' status, and it isn't full or close to full. It seems to sync everything else as normal or as chosen by me, so there are 2024 syncs from everything, as chosen, including the current sims 4 saves I recently made that weren't from the lost household.

The third screenshot is from my OneDrive recycling bin and shows the only save slot file I could find, there was a fourth (I cannot attach four) that had the same name as the third but they were several hours apart, both very recent from the older household being played again as they appeared after I had saved progress in this remaining household. Additionally there was potentially more than one household's saves entirely deleted as I think there was another household's save I played on before, but I'm not entirely sure if this happened directly as a result of the issue or if I just chose to delete those other save as well to clear out before this issue arose (before the time of the PC reset).

@jjki267876787765  How did your user folder end up in OneDrive's Pictures folder?  Hopefully that's the issue and this isn't your current Documents directory.  At any rate, please search in Windows for Command Prompt, open it, and enter this command, starting with reg query:

reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" /v "Personal"

Please post the result.  This spits out the location of the Documents directory, for this user account at least.

Please also list the folder Sims 4 is currently reading, as described here:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2018/07/how-to-find-your-user-folder/

In case you want to get a head start on checking backup saves, here's how to recover them manually:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2014/09/recover-backup-save-game/

  • Here's the result of running the query command (attached). Additionally I have attached the file path of my current saves in the game right now (excluding the lost save progress I first referred to, before the PC reset).

  • While OneDrive is still active and has synced as normal, I have moved the Documents folder to the right place. I also noticed that the Desktop folder was in an odd place and put it back in the default location using the same method. Oddly enough the Documents folder is available by clicking through the normal path to my username folder and its files, but if I pin my username folder to Quick Access, and click on the Quick Access pinned username folder, the Documents folder does not show up as an icon within this pinned folder (yet shows up normally if I just pin the Documents folder itself or access through all other normal ways), but this isn't really an issue as it's more convenient to access Documents as normal anyway.

I have tried to recover 2024 saves that didn't end in '.save' (all of them did end in a variant of '.ver' followed by a number) but I don't think it was successful as I didn't find any new saves within my files after doing so, I think that might be because they didn't have anything to do with my lost save files anyway/were the same as the saves I currently have. Hopefully the corrected file path of the Documents folder prevents this from recurring. Thanks
