Sims 4 - VC++ runtime Redistributable package error

Hi All!

I've run into 2 issues since my computer upgraded to Windows 11 (not by choice and I can't undo it). I ran into an error where origin said

"Cannot access file: ." once I hit that error, I tried running origin as Administrator and now in trying to repair Sims 4 to regain access I receive the error:

"Error: The VC++ runtime redistributable package was not installed successfully. Setup cannot continue. (-2147023436)

I do have Bitdefender, but I have Origin set to full access. In addition I have:

- Uninstalled and reinstalled Origin

- Uninstalled and tried reinstalling/repairing Sims 4 (where I run into issues)

- Run as administrator

- Done a clean reboot, still ran into same issue

- Gone into my Origin folder and repaired vcredist_64, vcredist_64_vs2010, vcredist_x64_vs2015, vcredist_x86, vcredist_x86_vs2010, vcredist_86_vs2015

(Only the 2010 files showed any activity when I repaired or tried running as administrator.)

I submitted a ticket, but the EA tech support keeps switching people each day so I keep being told to try the same things over and over again with no resolution. Any help would be appreciated, as I feel like I need a degree in computer engineering at this point to play the game. Thanks for the help in advance!

  • @b-miller2668  Please uninstall your 2015 runtimes—repairing often doesn't go far enough—and install the newest ones from Microsoft.  Hit Windows key-i, select Apps, scroll down to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, click on each of the 2015 versions, and select Uninstall.  Don't touch the runtimes from any other year, unless you see ones that are newer than 2015, in which case get rid of those too.

You can download the newest (2015-2022) runtimes here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

You'll need to install both the x86 and x64 versions, but you can skip the ARM version, which is for a different class of device.  Run the installers as an admin: right-click on the downloads and select "Run as administrator."  Restart your computer when you're done.

If you get an error when trying to install, you may need to disable Bitdefender temporarily, as in, just long enough to install the runtimes and (possibly) launch Sims 4 once.  As long as you don't do anything else in that time, your computer should be safe.

@puzzlezaddict thank you for your response!  That seemed to end the VC++ error, but now I'm back to receiving the following error:

Origin was denied access to the following file or folder: .

This may be due to security restrictions or disk corruption. Check the folder permissions or check your disk for errors before retrying the download.

Help us improve Origin by submitting an error report.

Do you think that's a bitdefender issue as well?

    Thanks again for your help!

@b-miller2668  I don't know whether it's a BitDefender issue, but the first step would be disabling it to test.  (You can reenable it when you're done regardless of the results.)  If BitDefender is causing the error, adding exceptions for TS4_x64.exe and Origin.exe should be sufficient.

By the way, does the error not list a file or folder at all?  If you get the error again and it does reference a file or folder, please write down the file path you see in the error.

Please also run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

@puzzlezaddict Thanks for the reply. We disabled for a test, reinstalled 2015-2022 VC_redist and it gave me the same error. It does not list the file at all, just a "." where the file reference/file path should be.

I tried running as administrator after all was said and done, and am now back to the VC++ error. Dxdiag report is attached.

@b-miller2668  The driver for your graphics chip is quite old and could be the problem here.  So please try updating it.  You can get a new driver directly from Intel:

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/124967/intel-core-i58250u-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-40-ghz/downloads.html

You want the driver dated March 8.  Run it as an admin: right-click on the download and select "Run as administrator."  Restart your computer after it installs and before trying to do anything else.

If you can't install that driver for some reason, let Windows look for one.  Hit Windows key-X, select the Device Manager, expand the Display adapters tab, click on the graphics chip (Intel UHD 620), and click the black and green Update button in the menu.  Restart after it installs, that is if anything installs.  You should be able to tell by the date: right-click on the graphcis chip name and select Properties.  Your current driver is from 2018, and a new one should be from 2022 or at least late 2021.

Your dxdiag also shows OneDrive is erroring out during some setup process.  So it's best to unlink it for now.  First, back up any data in Documents that you don't want to lose, then unlink OneDrive, which for this purpose should work as well as uninstalling it entirely.
