sims 4 crashing when gpu hits 100

hi, i've been having issues with my game recently where the gpu usage will be steady at probably 30%-ish and then spike to 100% and crashes to my desktop with no error message. it's been happening consistently over the past few days at seemingly random times while in the game. i assumed at first that it was my mods/cc because i just recently switched over to a new pc from my old one and i basically plopped a bunch of cc into the game without slowly integrating it at all but even after doing that in a new clean folder the game still crashes (i'm able to get through CAS without any crashing after doing so but as soon as i get into game it crashes at random). i had maybe ten package files in my mods folder when i was testing to see if it was an issue with a script mod, there were no script mods in the folder yet, and it still crashed on me. i've run the game without cc as well and it still crashed, so i don't know why my gpu is overclocking 😞

i've tried looking on the internet for a solution but i can't seem to find one ☹️ this happens to some of my other games but mostly the sims 4. i have a lastcrash file but for some reason it's not letting me attach it, i'll attach my dxdiag though.

  • @strahberrie  Your GPU certainly shouldn't be anywhere near 100% use in Sims 4 no matter what's happening on-screen.  But the first question is whether you've limited your in-game framerates.  To be clear, not doing so still shouldn't max out the graphics card, but it's an easy step.  You can enable vertical sync in the Nvidia Control Panel or use the in-game setting (with the other graphics settings); please keep in mind that v-sync only works in fullscreen mode.

I'd also like to know what fps you're seeing during these spikes.  If you don't have any monitoring software installed, you can enable the in-game fps counter with the cheat fps on; the number will appear in the lower-left corner, over the user interface.

Please let me know whether you're using Origin or the EA app as welll.  If you're running the EA App, I'd like to know whether this problem happens with Origin.  Some players can't use Origin at all anymore, but for those who can, it can be reinstalled from the link in this post:

You wouldn't need to uninstall the EA App; just don't try to run both apps at the same time.

@puzzlezaddict so that worked! thank you! i feel silly for not trying that in the first place. the fps i would get during the spikes before it crashed was like 98 or 100 but with v-sync on the max fps i get is 60. and i use the origin app, i don't have the ea app installed at all.

but now i have another issue... its unrelated to the crashing but now my sims wont do their interactions? i'll click on an object to interact with and they'll go over to it but wont actually perform the action. i took out my script mods again thinking that was the problem but it still occurs without them. i've also tried repairing my game to see if that would fix it but it doesn't ☹️

@strahberrie  Does this happen in a new save?  If not, then the issue is something in your main save.  One easy test is to move your sims to a different house, which you can do in Manage Worlds.  You don't need to save your progress; just let me know whether it helps.

If the new save is affected too, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save and let me know whether the new sims are affected as well.
