Sims 4 Keeps Crashing
Hello all, I am hoping someone can help me. My Sims 4 game keeps crashing. Usually this is after about 2 minutes of gameplay, but sometimes happens sooner. There is no common denominator that I can...
@busypixie VCRUNTIME140.dll is a component of the 2015-2019 VC++ runtimes, which have been superceded by the 2022 runtimes and which Sims 4 and the EA App both use. So please uninstall your current versions and install fresh ones. Hit Windows key-i, select Apps, scroll down to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, and for every version dated 2015 or newer, click on it and select Uninstall.
You can download fresh copies directly from Microsoft:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170
You'll need both the x86 and x64 versions, but skip the ARM version, which is for a different class of device. Restart your computer after uninstalling and before trying to play.
Reinstalling Sims 4 probably won't help, although it might if the process happens to replace the VC++ runtimes in question. I don't actually know if that's the case or if the installer detects the presence of the runtimes and skips that step entirely. Still, it's a lot faster to just replace the runtimes rather than downloading the entire game again.
Hey @puzzlezaddict I have done this twice, one time I was able to play for 2 hours before it crashed again. Yet, the same error persisted, even with the updated Visual C++ Redistributables. I am at a loss...
EDIT: The error still happens even after also uninstalling and re-installing the entire game... *cries in despair*.
@busypixie Are you currently playing with no mods or custom content? A bad mod or cc item could cause this error too, and that's more likely when you can play normally for more than a minute or two: the game runs fine until the mod tries to perform a certain function or the cc item is first used in that play session. For example, the cc might not cause problems unless it's on-screen.
Hey @puzzlezaddict. I cannot make sense of what is happening. The error code changes now depending on the hour. Sometimes it appears like this, without the VCRUNTIME140.dll error:

I have tried playing with different groups of mods and there is no rhyme or reason as to what is happening. I have also attempted to locate conflicting mods with the Better Exceptions mod.
If you're interested, these are the only mods I play with: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GnohJB1VpV8nkwNtaz6SX5tzQBLA8p8c/view?usp=sharing
The game will crash without mods, but it lasts much longer. It will always ONLY occur in Live Mode, no matter the circumstances. It will never crash in CAS or Build Mode.
EDIT: I have also since updated to Windows 11 in case this had anything to do with my issue... desperate times. I ran a new dxdiag.
@busypixie I'd be interested to know which errors happen when the game crashes with no mods present. Since you can play longer, the mods are obviously having some impact, and it's difficult to troubleshoot properly when multiple factors are at play.
As for your partner's experience, there are several possibilities. One is that the computer itself is unaffected by whatever is causing your game to crash. Another is that one of the mods you use is incompatible with one of the packs you own but not with the base game. It's unlikely that this is entirely a Sims 4 issue though—we'd see a lot more reports than we do. Lots of players own every pack and happily play for hours at a time with no crashes.
@puzzlezaddict We may have found a reason!? My partner installed The Sims 4 base game on his computer and tried with all the mods I use. He had NO issue. I checked my other devices and I kept having this issue! It seems this might be related to a conflict with DLC... as with base game, there is no crash! He has the same Visual C++ Redistributables as me, so I am hoping I see a change with the next patch maybe?
