Do you have an Apple store near you? If so, and upgrading to Yosemite doesn't work, make an appointment at the Genius bar for them to look at it.
It would be worth checking where the RAM is seated for over clogging of dust and fluff too. You can find this on the underneath of the screen. There will be 3 little screws which you can undo safely in the middle. You'll see the RAM chips slotted in. Don't touch them but just gently blow away any fluff that's accumulated (do this while your Mac is off). Also gently blow away any fluff you can see in the vent on the back at the top.
