Sims 4 not starting in 2024 Please help im desperate

I tried to open sims in 2024 after not playing it for a long time. I knew that several updates had been made so I was expecting some complication with starting the game, but I didn't realize that origin had been shut down and was replaced by the EA app. So, it was installed on my computer when I tried to open sims. I logged in with my account and tried opening sims again. It said that there was an initialization error at startup every time I tried to open it. I took out my mods and CC and tried again but to no avail. I did research and tried different methods but none of them worked. I messed with the files, which was a bad idea because after I did that, trying to start it just gives me an error message saying sims is already running. I've also tried uninstalling and re-installing both the Sims 4 and the EA app, but it hasn't done anything. I paid good money for this game does anyone have any advice they can give me?? I'm desperate, I've been working at this for days now.

  • @exileBailey  The files in your screenshot have nothing to do with Sims 4, with the exception of one that's just a pointer to a different location.  Please check onedrive.com for your missing saves, both "My files" and the recycle bin.  If you find any saves, download them and store them somewhere safe if you can, preferably an external drive.

It seems like your entire user folder is gone, either pushed to cloud storage by OneDrive or deleted somehow.  A new one will spawn when you can open the game again, but it won't contain any of your old data.  However, if you do find any saves when signed into onedrive.com, you might also find other Sims 4 files and can download and later restore those as well.

For now, I would suggest either getting rid of OneDrive entirely or at least preventing it from syncing the Documents folder.  Both options are covered here:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-PC/CURRENT-ISSUE-Sims-4-saves-user-content-disappearing-PC/m-p/12475370#Disabled

Whichever approach you choose, use the same Command Prompt command to confirm that your Documents folder is no longer inside the OneDrive folder.  If it's still there, use this guide (also in the post I've linked) to force Documents back to the proper location:

Then try again to play, and let me know how it goes.

Thank you for clarifying. This is what I got after typing in the command, " C:\Users\Clini\OneDrive\Documents". I looked and found an Electronic Arts folder but it's empty, it has no Sims 4 files. I downloaded VoidTools everythings and got nothing when I searched the "GameVerson" phrase. However, when I searched the slot phrase, I got what is shown in the screenshot.

I did what you suggested, and my game finally launched. Thank you very much but I still have an issue that maybe you could give me some advice on. I added my saves and CC back into the sims folder and everything launched fine although some graphics are very glitchy, I just assume that could be my CC and I'll trouble shoot what exactly is causing that. What I need advice on however is I can't find any households I created and saved to my library in the gallery. I would really like to get them back. Do you know which file I'd have to restore to get those back?

@exileBailey  The saves are likely gone, unfortunately.  That was the point of searching for Slot_ in various ways.  The only save file name pointed to OneDrive, so you could still look in your onedrive.com account, but the files are no longer on your computer.

I would guess that the in-game Library files are gone too; those would be inside a folder called Tray.  You can use Everything to search for a Tray folder, and keep in mind that you'll have a mostly-empty new one from when you most recently launched Sims 4.  It's worth checking onedrive.com for those too.  They'll have file extensions like .hhi, .bpi, .trayitem, etc.  If you find many such files, or saves, at onedrive.com, feel free to post screenshots and ask what exactly they are.

I did what you suggested and couldn't seem to find what I was looking for. I'm okay with that though, I don't mind remaking my sims. Thank you both so much for your help, I couldn't have figured this out alone.

@exileBailey  I'm sorry to hear you lost your content.  I know it doesn't help now, but in the future, please do yourself a favor and make backups of your saves and anything else you would be sad to lose.  External storage is cheap, and a Google account comes with enough free online storage to keep a few precious saves and builds.

  • Have you been able to find the issue and or fix it? Ive had the same problem but I also get the infinite "Preparing Game" by EA my game will not open and if its not preparing the game for hours it just tells me its already running.

@Lily_Lilo13  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, if it launches, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If that doesn't help, please try the suggestions here:

I've tried this and the other solution you have given (thank you very much 🙂) but none of the two have worked. I'm given the same response every time. "Preparing Game" and "Game is already Running" ://

@Lily_Lilo13  What antivirus do you use?  And to be sure, you still get the "game already running" error in a new local admin Windows account?  If it's not specifically local, that itself could be a problem.

Please also let me know whether you've installed the game directly through the EA App or through Steam or Epic.
