You won't loose anything. Just make sure to not delete any files and make a backup.
I had the same problem, but a factory reset didn't help at all. if i create a new save or go back to a different save, the option is on the telephone/computer but not in my current save. I put a lot of time and effort into the save i have now, and i'd rather not ditch it because i can't send my sims on vacation.....
