Sims 4 White Screen/Not Responding on startup after 22 Oct 2024 patch

I play on PC. I backed up my saves and tray files to my desktop, removed the few mods I had, and updated the game on 22 October 2024. When I tried to boot the game, I got a plain white screen. I let it sit for several minutes before deciding it wasn't going anywhere. Using CTRL+ALT+DEL to get to the Task Manager, it said Sims 4 was not responding. I closed the game from there. I repaired the game and it finally loaded. Unfortunately, if I try to add any of my save or tray files back into the game, I'm right back to getting the white screen and the game not responding when I try to boot it, even if I try to repair it. I tried renaming the Sims 4 folder to Sims 4 Backup and let it generate all new files. That did not work. I tried forcing the config file, that also did not work. I tried starting the game on a clean boot of my computer - that did not work. I have tried completely uninstalling my game and doing a fresh install and I still get the white screen. I had to REPAIR the fresh install before the game would boot, and I still cannot restore any tray or save files to my game. What is going on?

I'm not sure it this is relevant, but when the game fails to boot, any windows I have open at the same time (Discord, folders, browser for support) get resized. The time I did get the game to boot, I was not able to use ALT+TAB to view other windows or anything.

Due to the window resizing element, I checked my display settings. They were the recommended setting for my computer. However, I changed them to another display setting, then set it back to the recommended setting and now my game will finally open consistently. Not sure what it was about changing the display setting and then restoring it that changed anything, but my game is working again.

  • @JoAryn  Would you mind posting screenshots of the settings you changed, or a description of where to find them and the exact values you're using now?  I ask because I've seen six other reports of this particular white screen issue and am still trying to find a way to help these people.  I have noticed some patterns though.

I'd also like to see a dxdiag from your computer to compare it to the others.  (Everyone else has an HP gaming laptop (mostly Victus, one Omen) with a 13th-gen Intel processor, and they're all using a DPI scaling of 120.)  Here's how to run one:

    https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/pc/how-to-gather-dxdiag-information/

  • i believe im also having this exact same problem, granted without the resizing of other applications. any help would be greatly appreciated, i miss playing (i havent been able to for months with all the new updates + mods updating + a couple bugs) and i really want to play again but this is the main thing standing in my way. i want to continue my old saves too..

  • @malumxr  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, if it launches, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

This does mean your saves won't be available, but they can be added back once the game is stable again.

If that doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

i dont feel a need to do this per se as i was actually able to do this prior to gaining the issue (i had done a complete uninstall + reinstall of sims 4 after backing up my mods. tray files and saves, and i tested it as is before copying my files over and i was able to play the game fine) but if you think that i should try it again anyway please let me know.

  • @malumxr  If you're saying the game didn't work with absolutely none of your old content in the user folder, then that's the same test.  Just post a dxdiag and we'll go from there.

nono the game DID work with none of my old files in, and the issue came up after adding my old files and my mods. i thought it was just another mod outdated issue so i updated the mods but that still doesnt change the white screen issue.

but anyway, here's the dxdiag file !!

  • @malumxr  If the game works fine with none of your old content added, then the problem is some of your old content.  Mods are always the first suspect, and some updated mods can still be broken.  Some that don't have updates may also be broken.  So please test without your Mods folder but with the rest of your old files and let me know what happens.  If the game works, you'll need to sort through your mods and custom content.

If the game still doesn't work with the Mods folder removed, please remove one folder of your old content at a time until you figure out what's causing the issue, and let me know what it is.

Your dxdiag does show a number of Sims 4 crashes, but they're all generic and could easily be the result of outdated mods or cc.  They could also be due to trying to load a corrupt lot, or some other causes.

the game did (unfortunately) run for me without my mods folder so i guess i have a new tedious task to get thru (aka sorting through almost 2k worth of cc and mods) if i want to be able to play with my old saves again 😢 ty for the help

  • @malumxr  The task can be much less tedious if you compare your mods collection to the list of known broken mods and cc after the latest patch:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/Mods-CC-Issues/Broken-and-Updated-Sims-4-Mods-and-CC-1-111-Dec-3-2024-Game/td-p/14300669

You may also want to double-check the previous patch's list, summarized in post 8.  For everything else, the 50/50 method makes the process much more efficient.

    https://modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Finding_Problem_Custom_Content#The_50.25_Method

You can also ask for help in the Mods subforum.  I'm not moving your posts there since the original poster may not have had a mods-related issue, but it would be fine to create a new thread.
