TS4 crashing with no error PC

Hi,
For a few days now TS4 is constantly crashing and shutting down by itself.

I recently moved the game to an external hard drive (1TB Seagate) since with the amount of DLC and kits, it took ages to load.
This was about a week before the crashes started.

Since, I've done the following to see if I could troubleshoot it myself:

- Updated drivers

- Deleted mods (and reinstalled because that didn't seem to be the issue)

- Changed TS4 game settings to lower quality

- Deleted old save files

My anti-virus software was scanning my external HD daily too and at first I thought that was a trigger. I turned off the scans for the drive but unfortunately, the game still randomly crashes and shuts down in seconds. There doesn't seem to be a trigger. Or at least not one I can identify.

I've attached a DxDiag. I'd appreciate some help here to fix this. Or maybe it's just time to invest in a proper gaming PC.

Thanks in advance!!

  • @melaniejoycevl  Thanks for the dxdiag.  The Sims 4 crashes point to a component of Windows that is unlikely to be corrupt, but between that and the failed Windows updates, it's worth running a couple of basic checks of your Windows system files.  Here's how:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

Before launching Sims 4, pause OneDrive syncing; you can see the option by right-clicking the cloud icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.  Please test with no mods or custom content, at least for now, to keep things simple.

I don't think this necessarily means that you need to get a new computer.  But if you're interested in buying one, now or later, feel free to ask for whatever kind of help or information would make the process easier for you.  That could mean anything from a list of components to look for to specific links to good options in your price range.  It's not worth having that discussion until you're ready to buy though—prices and inventory change too quickly for the information to stay valid for long.

Thanks for giving me some hope here.

I did the “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” and “sfc /scannow”. Both showed no issues (see screenshot attached).

I then restarted and checked for updates. There was one pending and installed it. Then another reboot.

I managed to disable the OneDrive syncing. Started up TS4 to disable the mods and CC and open it again.

I built for a bit with no issues, to which I decided to up the quality settings back to Ultra (as I've had before). Closed the game and started to make sure settings were set.

I then played again for a while with no issues and decided to enable mods and CC again. Changed settings, close game, start game.. and then it went bad.

I found a couple of broken CC packs and deleted those. That seemed to help. I've been playing again for several hours now with mods on and all of a sudden the game froze and shut down.

So still things are going wrong. ☹️

I have mods and CC installed via CurseForge (for easy updating mods etc.) I'm not sure this is giving issues due to the fact it's installed on a different drive than TS4?

I'd appreciate some more help with this.

@melaniejoycevl  It sounds like one or more mods might still be the issue, but that's far from definitive.  What I can say is that just because a mod is hosted on CurseForge doesn't mean it will never cause any issues in your game.

I'd like to see a crash dump from the most recent Sims 4 crash.  It might not say anything useful, but if the crash is unrelated to mods, the dump could be informative.  Click Windows key-R and copy and paste this:

    %LocalAppData%\CrashDumps

When you enter, you'll see a list of .dmp files.  If one of them is from Sims 4 or the EA App, please upload it to a third-party filehosting site (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) and link it here.  If you see a crash dump that was written at exactly the time the game crashed, I'd like that too.  But in either case, please only upload files with a timestamp that matches the most recent crash, or one of the crashes post-DISM and sfc if you've since had more than one.

I've uploaded the two most recent crash dump files on WeTransfer https://we.tl/t-q6ii0TsN9y

In the meantime, I'll try to find what CC might be corrupt and delete them to see it that might fix it.

Thanks a lot for your help 🙂

On my quest to find corrupt mods/cc I found out I had two folders called The Sims 4 and De Sims 4 (one English, one Dutch) in the Electronic Arts folder in My Documents.
Both contained game files, logs, mods etc.

I cleaned out the mods/cc, combined the files from both folders in one (deleted duplicates) and then checked the integrity of the game files in Steam settings of TS4.

This resulted into re-installing all DLC and set all game settings back to default. My save file was still there though (thankfully).

I've been playing on and off for 8 hours with the game running even when not playing. So far, it hasn't crashed.

I won't really have time to do more testing the coming week due to a busy work schedule, but if I do find some time I'll check again to make sure the issue is resolved.

If you happen to find something odd in the CrashDump-files I linked in my previous reply, I'd love to know about them 🙂

@melaniejoycevl  I didn't see anything particularly interesting in the crash dumps, but that isn't conclusive.  In case you're not already aware, Sims 4 will use "De Sims 4" any time you're playing in Dutch and "The Sims 4" when you're playing in English.  You can swap saves, mods, Tray files, etc. between these two folders as you wish.
