Two installs of The Sims 4 on the same drive?

Hi, I see two The Sims 4 files installed on my F drive where the actual game is installed? One has a build number pointing to the April 16 patch? 1.106.148.1030

I had the main game originally installed via EA app and then switched to Steam from which I play now. Is April patch version still the EA installed main game? I cannot seem to find this version on the F drive when searching in File Explorer.

Can this version be uninstalled? 1.106.148.1030

  • On Steam, it says the installed file for the Sims has 22.21 GB.

  • @Secretglittergal  22 GB is about the right size for the Sims 4 base game, while adding all current packs raises the size to more like 60 GB.  So if you have some but not all packs installed, 35 GB may be accurate.

For the two listings, it's possible that you removed the EA App version of Sims 4 without also removing the associated registry entries, and that's the second copy you're seeing.  If you can't find a second full install on your computer, it's not there and you can ignore the duplicate entries in your screenshot.

Removing this registry data is a dicey prospect, since deleting the wrong entry can prevent an application or even your whole computer from working properly, so it would be best to use a tool like Piriform's CCleaner to do the work for you.  Or you can uninstall the entire game and everything tied to it with Revo Uninstaller, then reinstall the one copy you want to keep.  In that case, change the name of the Sims 4 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts first so it doesn't get deleted too; this folder holds your saves and other user data.

The free versions of CCleaner and Revo are both fine.

If you'd like to search for that possible second copy of Sims 4, open a File Explorer window, click This PC in the left panel, and enter TS4_x64 in the search field.  You should only see one copy, located wherever the game is installed.  You can also search This PC for other files in that Bin folder (GraphicsCards, GraphicsRules, etc.), in case your second installed copy of Sims 4 is incomplete.

Thanks for the time to look into this, puzzlezaddict.

I did a search in File Explorer for  TS4_x64, and there is only one instance of this file which lives here: F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\The Sims 4\Game\Bin

I do have the option to uninstall the 35 GB version that I see in Apps and Features - should I try this (after renaming everything "Sims 4" in the documents folder? Not sure why would I have to go into the registry (if I understand you correctly) to get rid of the first install?

As you can see, the 21.6GB file references the April patch while the 35 GB file has the same icon as the game launcher which confuses me as naturally, I would lean towards uninstalling the one with the game icon.

I do have ~14 EPs installed as well.

    Any more thoughts on this?

@Secretglittergal  What I was saying was, there may not be a second copy of Sims 4 at all, that the second version you're seeing may not exist except as a set of registry entries.  This would be leftover data that makes your computer think you have a second install when you don't.  That's what I meant about deleting registry data.  It's like having a log of the install but not the install itself.

Renaming the Sims 4 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts won't help unless you somehow installed the game there at one point.  I doubt you have, and you can confirm by comparing the program files you see on F with the Sims 4 folder in Documents.  There shouldn't be any overlap in the contents of these two folders.
