@MrsAlieB What antivirus do you use, if any, and does it help to disable the program before playing? As long as you don't do anything else at the same time, your computer should be safe.

I just use Windows Security - never been an issue before but I did go in and make sure EA & Sims were allowed on the firewall

@MrsAlieB Try playing with the EA App in offline mode.
If that doesn't help, create a new admin Windows account and try playing there. Make it a local account, as in, don't sign into Microsoft, and don't sync with any other services you normally use. You'll be able to sign into the EA App and launch Sims 4 without needing to install anything.
