Update deleted all my saves and mods

Hi!

I'm really depressed after having updated my game. For some unknown reason, since I've updated the game all my saves and mods have been deleted. When I go into the saves and mods folders there's absolutely NOTHING there. And I don't have backup. Is everything lost?? And WHY? I'm so fricking sad right now.

@puzzleaddict quick update. I just had a look through the waste basket and it turns out my entire Electronic Arts folder was in there. I have still no explanation as to WHY it would be in there (I'm 100% sure I didn't put it there because I'm a notorious files hoarder and never delete anything and its dated for the same day of my game update, so I'm sure they must be linked but I don't know why, because no update has EVER done that before and I haven't heard of anyone else's game deciding to throw itself in the bin - it's almost funny now) but at least that means I can restore it. They were LITERALLY deleted. I still can't believe it, but it's a relief (though still quite a mystery... it makes my head spin)

  • @MaddyMcMoody  Does your computer run Windows or macOS, and what version?  (If you're on a Mac, I can move your post to the Mac section, since troubleshooting is a bit different.)

It's possible your user data folder, with all your saves and mods, was moved elsewhere, either by you or by the system.  In Windows, open a File Explorer window and search for "config" (without quotes).  You should see a file called config.log with a last modified date from the last time you opened the game.  That file will be in the folder that's missing all your saves and mods.  Hopefully there's another config.log as well though—it would be in the same folder as your old content.  If you find this folder, you can transfer the saves and mods inside into the currently empty game folder.

If you're not sure what to do with all this, please let me know how many config files you have, and the file path for each one.

@puzzlezaddict Hiya! It's on a Windows laptop (Windows 10 on an HP Probook 430 G5). There's only one config.log and it's dated the day I updated (Feb 8th).
I really don't understand what's happened, every single other question like this I could find in forums at least had SOMETHING left, some previous save or a hidden folder or whatnot, but my whole game is swiped clean and I don't know why. No saves, no mods, no screenshots, no saves, no tray items, no videos, NOTHING. It's really sad, I could kick myself for not having a backup

@MaddyMcMoody  The usual place for the user data folder to go is cloud storage, i.e. OneDrive in Windows.  So you could look there for a copy of the folder.  I guess a third-party cloud storage service (google drive or the like) could also move the contents of your Documents folder under the wrong settings.  But you'd at least know that you have that service.

I agree, it's very strange that your folder would just disappear.  Usually, the only ways this could happen are if you had a virus oro a damaged hard drive.  But since this coincided with a Sims 4 update, it does seem like the game did it, and not your system.

I'm sorry this happened to you, and I wish there were a way to fix it.

Edit:  Never mind, I just saw your new post.  That's great news; even if there's no explanation for it, I'm glad you found your data after all.
