(PC) Constant Crashes

Since the July 1st update, I've encountered constant crashes to desktop which I've never experienced before. Here's a list of everything I've done as well as a dxdialog attached:

  • NO mods or CC
  • Updated Nvidia driver
  • Repaired game
  • Deleted cache files
  • Started brand new save games
  • Played offline
  • Moved the entire Sims 4 folder out and started fresh

The one thing that seems to work is deleting the Options.ini file so it regenerates when I load up the game. But soon after it starts crashing again. It will crash in build mode, CAS, world management, loading screen, etc. I'd appreciate any insight into fixing this. Thanks!

  • DarthEmpress  Thanks for the dxdiag, but it unfortunately doesn't make clear the source of the crashing.  The two Sims 4 errors it lists basically say the game crashed because it crashed.  It's possible you have the same issue as other players with high-end Intel CPUs that the motherboard may overclock by default, which is sometimes solved with a BIOS update, so look for one for your board.  If you don't see one though, the next step is messing with BIOS settings, so let's put that aside for now.

The Options.ini file stores all your in-game options, graphics and otherwise.  Are you changing any settings after you load the game for the first time post-deletion of the file?  If so, please list the settings you're changing, in case one of those is the culprit.

Please also let me know what world(s) you're playing in, and whether the game runs better in a new save in one of the base game worlds and without any content from the Gallery or your own library.

    Thank you for your help.

I did do a BIOS update earlier this year because of another game, Avowed, so that seems to be up to date. The game never crashed before even when I did play with mods. I haven't played with mods since before Life & Death and did a clean install after removing all of them.

The settings I changed after deleting Options.ini is turning off help/discovery quests, turning off online notifications, and sometimes changing to windowed mode (it's crashed both in windowed mode and full screen). I just recently decided to check the box for directx 9 and Laptop Mode (even though I have a desktop) and that has seemed to help some. It only crashed once after several hours of playing.

The game runs the same in a new save vs and old save, same when I bring in content from the gallery. I also do not play with apartments in my game, but I do have the For Rent expansion. I play mostly in the occult worlds but also Willow Creek.

  • DarthEmpress  You shouldn't need to use laptop mode, and even if that addressed the issue, I wouldn't consider it a proper fix because it's basically disabling Advanced Rendering and all the graphics features that come with it.  (This isn't a criticism of the idea, just in case that's what you're hearing; all I'm saying is you should be able to play with better graphics.)  So please disable laptop mode again, but leave DX9 mode on for now.

With the worlds, I was mostly wondering about Innisgreen and whether you get more crashes there.  Several lots are triggering crashes for a least some players; the other occult worlds don't seem to be triggering any crashing right now, nor have they been an obvious problem in the past.  But if the game is crashing in Willow Creek, with no mods or custom content and nothing from the Gallery, that's a separate matter.

Going forward, please look for a Reliability Monitor report for any crash you get.  Click Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Look for an error that happened at exactly the time of your most recent Sims 4 crash.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  If you don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.

Please list each crash along with the lot you were playing, and if it's not an Innisgreen lot, what you and your sims were doing at the time.  You don't need to post separately for each crash if you don't want to; a text document with this info would be equally helpful.

If you do get a crash in Innisgreen, please also look for a corresponding lastcrash file in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4.  If you find one, open it and delete its first line, then attach it to your reply as well.  I can't do much with these files, and they're generally not informative for individual troubleshooting, but they may be helpful to EA in terms of investigating the issue with Innisgreen lots overall.

  • DarthEmpress  The python37_x64.dll error points to the issue with motherboard-overclocked CPUs I mentioned before.  Specifically, the CPU Turbo Boost option in the BIOS Advanced settings is the culprit.  This is not the only cause of the python errors, but it's far and away the most common right now.  So please disable CPU Turbo Boost and see whether it helps.

Even if you wouldn't want to keep using this setting, it would at least tell us that this is the problem, and there might be a better way to address it.  As a practical matter, you wouldn't lose noticeable performance in most contexts, including most games, but perhaps you do have a use case where you want or need all available CPU power.
